I don’t only love to collect sea glass to make jewelry with I also love to collect interesting pieces of sea glass especially if it looks old.
This particular piece is black sea glass, a very dark olive green which appears to be black until light is shined upon it to reveal its true color. Black sea glass is a treasure and a very rare find. I almost hesitate to sell any jewelry using black sea glass.
In researching where this bottle lip originated from I came upon this website ~ http://www.bottlebooks.com/ where I was able to see a photo of where this piece originated from.
Here is a photo of the black sea glass lip I found ~
Here is a photo of the applied double collar I got from bottlebooks.com
This is how bottle lips were made in the years 1840 – 1870. Very interesting and very old.
If anyone has another identification for this bottle lip please don’t hesitate to comment. I’m learning and identifying glass shards is fast becoming a hobby of mine.
